Broken water main in east Oahu causes traffic delays, closes nearby schools
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Board of Water Supply crews continue repairs on a broken water main along Kalanianaole Highway in Kuliouou.
Two lanes are closed in the westbound direction between Moomuku Place and E. Halemaumau Street, causing a major slow down for town-bound drivers. A contraflow is in effect to allow an additional open westbound lane of traffic.
The broken water main also caused nearby schools to close for the day.
The state Department of Education said Kaiser High School and Kamiloiki Elementary School will be closed Monday amid ongoing repairs.
DOE acting communications director, Nanea Kalani, said the schools cannot provide running water for restroom use and hand-washing.
Separately, Heeia Elementary in Kaneohe also had to close this morning due to a water main break near campus.
DOE said parents are being notified.
The 24-inch main broke Saturday night and crews responded. Repairs were ongoing Monday morning.
Officials said while the water main is temporarily out of service, customers from Kuliouou-Kalani Iki to Koko Head will experience lower water pressure or have no water at all.
BWS said it has placed multiple water wagons and spigots in the area to provide customers with alternate water sources:
- Water Wagon parked in the driveway at 6030 Kalanianaole Highway
- Spigot on a fire hydrant at 5914 Kalanianaole Highway
- Spigot on a fire hydrant at 6030 Kalanianaole Highway
- Spigot on a fire hydrant at 6044 Kalanianaole Highway
Customers are urged to conserve water at this time.
Roving water wagons are available. Customers in need can call 748-5000, x1.
No word on when repairs will be completed.
